In modern society, the use of industrial robots is becoming increasingly widespread. Without timely maintenance, they are prone to a variety of issues. So, how should industrial robots be maintained?
The advent of industrial robots has replaced traditional manual labor, boosting operational efficiency, driving business growth, and significantly reducing labor costs. However, with prolonged use and in demanding on-site conditions, robots accumulate various types of waste and debris. Like automobiles, they require periodic oil changes and regular battery maintenance to extend their service life, prevent minor but unnecessary malfunctions, and avoid disruptions that could slow production. Regular maintenance is therefore essential for industrial robots.
Industrial robots require a comprehensive system maintenance every 3,000–5,000 operating hours (approximately one year). This maintenance involves inspecting both the robot’s control system and its mechanical structure for any abnormalities. Any issues detected should be addressed promptly to prevent minor faults from escalating, which could disrupt normal operation and increase equipment‑maintenance costs. Regular maintenance also helps extend the robot’s service life. Since robots consist of both mechanical and electrical components, mechanical wear is inevitable; proper upkeep can slow down such wear. Additionally, routine checks of the electrical circuitry help prevent overheating or damage to critical components, such as the robot controller, motors, and servo drives.
The inspection of the robotic arm includes checking for loose bolts or stripped threads; verifying that all components prone to loosening or disconnection are in proper condition; ensuring smooth and reliable gear shifting, as well as the flexibility and reliability of the control system’s safety and protective devices; examining the equipment for signs of corrosion, impact damage, misalignment, or leaks of oil, water, electricity, etc.; confirming that the surrounding floor is clean and tidy, free of oil stains and debris; and assessing lubrication conditions, with regular, scheduled replenishment of lubricant in the specified type, quantity, and at designated locations.
